What does BIPOC mean?
BIPOC (pronounced “bye-pock”) stands for black, Indigenous, and people of color. Originally just “POC” for people of color, the acronym is often extended in the United States to include the letters “B” and “I,” which recenter the term around the exceptional disadvantages black and Indigenous people face and have faced here.
While these two groups are generally the focus, most Americans interpret BIPOC to include Asian and/or Latinx as well. The idea behind this identifier is to create solidarity between communities of color, not to divide; so if you self-identify as BIPOC and meet the additional eligibility criteria below, we welcome you to sign up for the Name Exchange.
